Scene Analysis

"Crazy Stupid Love"

Although this scene is only a few minutes, you go through such a roller-coaster of emotions while watching it, and it is probably the most iconic and memorable scene from the movie. This scene is a major plot twist in the movie — it shows the main characters two worlds colliding and caused the audience to be shocked. Even if you didn't know the background of the story though, there is no doubt that this scene is entertaining for everyone. The mix of humor and the contrast between action and relaxed moments makes it engaging. It clear how important this moment was to the story. For background — the movie shows the life of two people (with a bit of an age gap) becoming friends and progressively helping each other with their love lives. The pivotal moment this scene shows is when the older friend realizes his daughter is dating his younger friend despite the fact that he doesn’t agree with his style of dealing with women. Overall, it was satisfying how the story started in a cheerful, relaxed setting, then proceeds to all of the characters acting confused, then continues to build with a fight starting and then with more characters entering, it gets more and more intense. Finally, at the end, the fight concludes and the scene finishes with a depressed and sad vibe. The close up shots of characters faces experiencing a variety of different emotions was very effective. The hilarious commentary throughout the scene along with the physical comedy makes it funny and captivating. There wasn’t any music in this scene which I think is smart because the music would probably take away from the witty and more sentimental comments that are important to the storyline as well as entertaining. But you can tell that when the scene gets more intense, the sounds increase, and the lighting changes. And when there is barely any sound at the end, that’s when the audience feels more sad and defeated. The beginning of this scene is an establishing shot of the main houses backyard which is an important part of the whole story line, and is where this whole debacle happens. The lighting stays consistent throughout the scene but shows that it's a nice day when it's happening, and doesn’t distract from the story.  Overall, this scene was compelling not only because it's important to the overall storyline, but because of the perfect mix of emotions, commentary, sound, and lighting.
